Profile

Associate Professor Janelle Wheat is an exceptionally innovative leader with the proven ability to initiate and inform the strategic development and implementation of highly diverse projects within the tertiary sector.  With over 10 years of experience working within a range of university schools, complemented by experience in the private and government sectors, Associate Professor Wheat is driven to create innovative opportunities to improve teaching and learning outcomes for both students and faculty alike.

With more than 9000 students and 700 staff, Charles Sturt University's Faculty of Science is distinguished by both its breadth of offerings and depth of research led teaching areas, with options including medical sciences, dentistry and health sciences, animal and veterinary sciences, agricultural sciences, environmental sciences right through to wine science. Janelle is responsible for contributing to Curriculum and Learning and Teaching policy development and for driving the implementation of these policies across a broad range of disciplines.

 Key Duties:
  • Leading the development and implementation of policies in teaching and learning across the faculty
  • Reviewing all courses to ensure alignment and compliance with the strategic positioning of the faculty as the Presiding Officer of the Faculty Courses Committee
  • Ensuring that the faculty meets government reporting requirements for quality measures of courses
  • Ratification of all assessment processes and standards throughout the faculty as the Presiding Officer of the Faculty Assessment Committee
  • Communication of policy changes, university-wide positioning decisions and performance expectations to ensure all staff members are conversant with impending changes and projected impacts
  • Collaboration with staff who influence the student experience to develop new processes to identify and support students at risk to strengthen their chances of completing their studies and therefore minimise attrition rates for the faculty
  • Effectively and concisely convey messages to staff members with highly divergent backgrounds, disciplines and positions within the faculty
  • Implementation of innovative approaches to place a focus on teaching excellence throughout the faculty
Key Achievements:

Janelle' strategic decision to improve retention of students, including those from low SES backgrounds utilising HEPP funding to employ three full time staff to:

  • develop a learning and teaching framework for the faculty
  • create and implement a faculty policy regarding the engagement of students
  • set minimum standards for good quality teaching both in the lecture room and in the online environment

This program achieved significant results for the faculty; creating a strong culture of support for students but also staff to advance their ability to engage with students.

The formation of Student Consultative Committees (SCCs) gave students a 'voice' concerning quality issues they felt were impacting on their studies. The SCCs were a mechanism to actively respond to student feedback and this improved student satisfaction; they were part of a democratic process and this gave them an opportunity to demonstrate active citizenship. Staff valued the chance to be given feedback they could address in real time. The faculty had 'just in time' evidence of processes that could be improved or exemplars of best practice.

Janelle drove the development of an Indigenous student mentoring model and led the implementation of the pilot across the University. The outcome was a successful Indigenous Advancement Strategy grant for ongoing adoption of a sustainable face to face mentoring scheme. 80% of the Indigenous students who were part of the pilot felt it assisted them to stay at university which is significant considering the standard attrition is greater than 30%.

Janelle initiated and led a professional development series for the entire faculty to enhance teaching and learning best practice and to provide a network of support for fostering excellence in innovation, online student learning and engagement. This program was very successful with each session averaging between 70 and 80 attendees across the faculty.  This program resulted in sharing of innovative teaching techniques and expertise, enhanced networking of student support services with academic staff and access to senior executive staff for a wider sense of inclusion and engagement with the policy makers.

Janelle organised and developed a two day teaching and learning retreat which was attended by the entire teaching faculty.  Notable international key note speakers, a student panel and the senior executive debated hot topics as part of the program.  This was the first time that the entire faculty staff had had the chance to meet and just focus on teaching and learning. Staff were thankful for the opportunity to re-energise their teaching philosophy prior to session and many initiatives, including how the faculty would meet the Indigenous Education Strategy, move to more Teaching Focussed positions and take the science of how our brains work to inform our teaching were initiated.

At the end of 2013, the University implemented a new Assessment and Moderation policy.  Janelle led the implementation of the policy in the Faculty of Science. This required communicating and driving a change in practice for most staff. In response to staff concerns Janelle took a leadership role in providing a framework within which staff could work together to develop an alternative process. This resulted in wide consultation and a refined reporting form and assessment processes.
Janelle has been instrumental in securing positive accreditation outcomes for three courses in the faculty. Janelle led the discipline teams, met milestones and ensured communication with the accrediting bodies, professional bodies and licensing bodies was considered, appropriate and highly professional. This key achievement required strong communication skills to draw staff together to contribute their expertise as appropriate and in very tight time frames. The outcomes were positive and benefited our students and the University.
