Single Loculus

Gynoecium - a guide to floral structure

Single Ovary with a single loculus

Many species have flowers with a single ovary per flower and when cut in transverse section there is a single loculus. In this case there are two possibilities. If the gynoecium has a single stigma, style and placenta then there is a single carpel (i.e. G 1). If there is more than one stigma, style or placenta then the number of carpels, e.g. G(3) for 3 fused carpels.
