Dr Novak is a researcher in physical and computational chemistry. After obtaining his BSc and DSc from University of Zagreb, Croatia he spent 6 years in the UK at King's College London and University of Birmingham doing research in photoionozation dynamics with synchrotron radiation source. Subsequently he was Associate Professor at National University of Singapore for 16 years before joining CSU.
His research interests are in the area of molecular electronic structure and spectroscopy of natural products, pharmaceutics, pesticides, organometallics and free radicals. He also works in the field of molecular modelling and computational chemistry. He has published 215 papers in international refereed journals including 20 papers in refereed journals on chemical education. He received an award from the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts for his work on the electronic structure of pesticides.
He is currently involved in delivering chemistry lectures to students of pharmacy, dentistry and clinical science. He is also interested in philosophy and history of sciences about which he wrote a book: "Science a Many-splendored Thing"
