Sofiya's proposed area of research is in the area of cell biology and biochemistry. Specifically, she is investigating drug targets of proteins involved in breast cancer (BC), currently funded by an NHMRC grant.
These proteins localise to the nucleus under specific conditions, and the ability to block this translocation across the nuclear envelope will be a basis for therapeutic intervention. Protein Kinase C-theta (PKC-θ) is a signaling kinase that functions as a transcriptional regulator and is a critical mediator of cancer stem cells function.
It is suggested that increased understanding of the distinct properties of PKC-θ will generate basis for the clinical development of effective therapies for women with BC.
