Dr Ian Skinner

Dr Ian Skinner commenced at Charles Sturt University as a senior lecturer in the physiotherapy department on the Port Macquarie Campus in January 2020. Ian previously taught at UTS in the Master of Physiotherapy program.

Ian completed his undergraduate physiotherapy training at The University of Notre Dame Australia in Perth. He was awarded his PhD in March 2018 from the University of New South Wales. His PhD investigated the role of cognitive bias in people with chronic low back pain. During his PhD he was involved in a large NHMRC randomised control trial investigating the effect of pain education on people with acute low back pain.

A registered physiotherapist Ian has previously worked in musculoskeletal settings and more recently in a specialised pain centre treating persistent pain patients within a multidisciplinary framework.

Ian enjoys educating physiotherapy students within an evidenced based framework while adopting a biopsychosocial approach. Ian enjoys the challenge of teaching students practical clinical reasoning skills that can be applied to any situation.

Dr Skinner is an early career researcher interested in the mechanisms and management of pain and the efficacy of patient centred approaches to treat people with debilitating conditions. He has presented both nationally and internationally as an invited speaker on the nature of pain and on evidence-based interventions for pain management in clinical practice.

Ian is currently interested in the relationship between movement and persistent pain.
